As one would expect, the update did not make the error return.

Other filesystems have well-known internals, no wonder those are preferred.

I think it would be feasible to use ext2/3 instead - internal memory is a black box in the sense that it will never be presented directly to another machine, therefore the FS doesn't matter as long as the local OS knows about it - or did I miss something important?
